What is Composting?

Did You Know?

The 2008 Olympic Games was one of the most popular sporting events to date. Over 185 million viewers watched as Michael Phelps swam to a record 8 gold medals. What you may not have realized is that environmental protection was taking place throughout the event. The National Aquatics Center, or “Water Cube”, was designed with water conservation in mind. The outer surface and roof façade can collect 10,000 tons of rain water, 70,000 tons of clean water and 60,000 tons of swimming pool water annually. Have a Green Holiday Season

With the winter months right around the corner, you may be looking for ways to implement green living techniques into your holiday season. One way is by ditching your old Christmas lights for energy saving LED lights. LED lights consume 90% less electricity than conventional Christmas lights and a whopping160% less than large Christmas lights. Ranging in price from around $8-$15, LED lights are a great way to help our environment. For more information on LED lights and where they can be purchased, click here.

Determine Your Carbon Footprint

Would you like to measure your impact on the environment? You can! Carbon footprinting measures your daily consumption habits in order to determine your impact on the environment. Your carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of greenhouse gases produced in your day-to-day life through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating, transportation etc

A carbon footprint has two parts: the primary footprint, and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is the measure of our personal carbon dioxide emissions including energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is the measure of our carbon dioxide emission from the manufacturing of the products we use and their eventual breakdown. What is Composting?

Composting is a frequently mentioned practice in environmental circles, but what is it and how can you get involved? Composting is simply the decomposition of biodegradable materials. By utilizing this technique, organic household and yard waste can be turned into an extremely useful soil-like end-product. Compost can be applied to lawns and gardens to help condition the soil and replenish nutrients. A variety of organic household and yard products can be used to make your own compost. These products include coffee grounds and filters, eggshells, fruits and vegetables, grass clippings, sawdust, newspapers, and wood chips. For more information, click here.
